‘Mac’ is not an acronym

Public information alert!

MAC, when used to indicate a Macintosh computer, is not accurate. Using all capital letters denotes an acronym, which is not correct in this context.

MAC is a common acronym for ‘media access control’ address, which is a set of characters assigned to a network device such as a wireless or ethernet card.

When referring to a Macintosh computer, you should instead use ‘Mac’, which is short for ‘Macintosh’. Sure, you could use it as an acronym for ‘Macintosh Apple Computer’, but that would make you stupid, and we don’t want that, do we?

Quickie Safe Mode tip for Parallels or VMWare

After a recent software update trashed my XP virtual machine, I needed to boot into Safe Mode to make a repair. None of the ‘normal’ Windows keystrokes seemed to be helping, until I discovered that what was needed was for the following keys to be held down as the vm booted:

FN-F8 (on a laptop)
or
Apple-F8 (on a desktop)

Hopefully this will help someone out there!

Painting and photography are the same; each renders imagination in tangible form. The difference is that painters can work completely from imagination, although most of us work from life as a starting point. The former is much easier for a layman to use and create what looks like a technically passable, sharp and well-exposed image. All one needs to know is the operational function of camera and all its associated features. Combined with all the other …

Stump Macasaurus – How do I back up a whole drive?

Reader ‘OldCoot’ asks:

Is there a way for a person to make a full back up of everything on a MacBook Pro to a USB/Firewire HD from Tiger without having to buy third party software?

Why yes, yes there is! And it’s so simple you will possibly do that wacky ‘I could have had a V8′ slap in the forehead after you read this.

Boot your computer using your OSX install disc. Hold down ‘C’ after the chime to boot to the disc.
When the Installer begins, ignore it, and instead choose ‘Tools/Disk Utility’
When Disk Utility starts, select your hard drive (as …

Each week I’ll take a few questions, run them through Google and cleverly disguise them as real answers by adding screenshots and dry wit.

Thanks, also, to ScottMac for giving me a shot and for promising to not ask me to ‘model it, like the logo’ …
