MACOSXHINTS: Open multiple items in a Stack
After clicking on a stack so that it fans or grids out, hold the Option key down, and then click on as many items as you desire within the stack. As you click each, it will open and the stack will remain onscreen. Unfortunately (at least when selecting folders), items will open behind what ever program you happen to be working in at the time.

Parallels – a waste of space?

Do you use Parallels version 3? Have you ever wondered where the hell all of your hard drive space is going?

I know, and now you can too!

When you have the option ‘Mount virtual disks to Mac Desktop’ enabled (which puts a browse-able shortcut to your ‘C’ drive on your Mac Desktop – see below), Parallels is creating a duplicate of the entire Windows disks file structure, wasting valuable space.

For example, when this option is enabled the contents of my /private/ directory is as follows:
sm:tmp sm$ du -sh /private/tmp
du: /private/tmp/1244/C/System Volume Information: No such …

V is for V****a

This post contains words about genitals and naughty innuendo*. Those with weak hearts should not read it, or at the very least should not write to complain about it.

When did the word vagina become so offensive as needing to be blurred out? Amazondoesn’t bleep it and even Wal-Mart sells the ‘Vagina Monologues’ book.

I mean, it’s not like 51% of the people on Earth HAVE the damn things and another 40+% want to interact with them (think about the math before you comment).

The Nerd Handbook

http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2007/11/11/the_nerd_handbook.html

A stunningly accurate depiction of life as a nerd.
:(

Take a read and see how many points you find that relate to you…

A nerd needs a project because a nerd builds stuff. All the time. Those lulls in the conversation over dinner? That’s the nerd working on his project in his head.
It’s unlikely that this project is a nerd’s day job because his opinion regarding his job is, “Been there, done that”. We’ll explore the consequences of this seemingly short attention span in a bit, but for now this project is the other big thing your nerd is building and …

MacLoot.com – Mac deals and steals

We’d like to invite you to take a look at MacLoot.com, a work in progress that allows the readers to submit sites or specific deals that are relevant to Mac users — for instance, a discount on software or hardware or perhaps a book, mouse or even web-hosting for Mac users.

Please feel free to submit your deals, or even use the site to offer discounts for your own Mac related products. Most of all though, tell your friends! The more deals posted, the better for everyone.

Here’s the story, of a Space named Brady

Renaming a Sidebar network alias can lead to data loss

http://digg.com/apple/Finder_Sidebar_network_aliases_not_so_much

Rob, over at MacOSXHints.com, ran into a problem similar to one I recently had.

Basically, if you create an alias in your Finder sidebar to a network share — for instance ‘iTunes Library’ on machine1, then rename the sidebar alias on machine2, Finder will rename the actual folder, not just the alias! This can lead to problems with other applications or potentially even operating system errors on machine1 where the folder actually resides.

Rob has a quick demo of the problem up on his site: http://www.macosxhints.com/images/105aliasbugs.mov

Macbook case cracks on wristpad

We’ve come across several instances recently of white (and in one case, black) Macbooks having cracks on the wristpad area. Conveniently enough, the damage appears directly beneath the magnets on the upper bezel, and are even in the same shape.

The damage can occur on either side, and after enough time the plastic casing actually will break off, leaving an actual, honest-to-God hole in the case of your laptop.

Obviously this is a manufacturing defect, likely stemming from too much pressure — thus causing the magnets to dig into the weaker plastic of the lower bezel. Ergo. Post facto. The defense rests.

NOTE:I’ve …
