3 Entourage Tips & Tricks

1 - Minimize the clutter

One of the things that's most annoying about the Entourage interface is that it is very ugly and cluttered by default. Most of us are used to our Mac software being clean, streamlined and intuitive. Here are a couple of things to change to make Entourage less prone to causing your eyes to bleed.

Shrink those buttons!
The default Entourage toolbar buttons are capable of consuming a tremendous amount of space. With just a few clicks however, you can make them far more space appropriate.

Click the 'Entourage' menu and choose 'Preferences'. Next, select the option 'Display small navigation buttons...':

After clicking ok, your Entourage layout has changed (hopefully for the better!) to this:

Preview messages *your* way
You'll also notice that your messages are given a preview, by default, to the right of the message list. You can easily change from this:

to this:

Simply click 'View/Preview Pane' and choose 'Below List'. You can also choose 'None' if you want to simply choose your messages without previewing them.

There are numerous other ways to make Entourage more visually palatable. Explore the Preferences and se what works for you. Don't worry, you won't break anything. :)

  • I found your article because I was searching for Entourage tips. I want to customize my Entourage desktop so that I can see my mail, tasks, and calendar all at the same time. I'm having trouble doing that without creating a project. I'm not sure if that's what I should do, but it's the only way I van get there right now. I tried using custom views but it didn't really address my needs. I just don't want to have to tab back and forth.
  • Christopher, acknowledging this dashboard customization limitation, you may want to try using hotkeys to quickly switch views: CMD+1 for Mail, CMD+2 for Address Book, CMD+3 for Calendar, etc.
