5 things the new iPhone is missing

I had a few emails regarding my dismissal of iPhone 2.0 as ‘meh’. I didn’t expound on that really, because I was assuming everyone would get my point: that it is far from the exciting effort we expected to see.

What’s missing, that is preventing the iPhone from being all it could be? Forget the bells and whistles like turn by turn gps and video-conferencing…we mean useful stuff.

In order for me to take the Iphone seriously as a convergence device, I need to be able to dump the extra stuff I lug around to satisfy the emptiness the iphone creates.

  1. More storage! We know that the iPhone can support more than a mere 16gb (read: Touch). Flash drives are up to dizzying capacity now, but we’re still getting the same storage on the new devices?
  2. There is still no MMS support to be seen. So we still get to use the uber-crappy viewmymessage.com middle-man. Congrats on your new 3g connection - 100kb multimedia messages are to much to handle, sorry. Hopefully some enterprising developer will fill this gap and not charge a fortune for their app.
  3. No wireless synching of music - for Steves sake, we have freaking wifi and bluetooth - let us use it!
Speaking of Bluetooth, how about supporting BT profiles so we can stream audio or synch with third party devices (such as my Pioneer head unit!)? Even the cheapest phone supports Bluetooth profiles of this sort.
  4. A better camera - 2 megapixels? Seriously? What’s the point of adding geotagging support if the pictures you’re tagging look like monkey ass? How about native video recording functionality - looks like a 3rd party opportunity there too.
Again - a carrier freebie offers camera features equal to or better than that of the iPhone.
  5. Over the air iTunes purchasing would be nice. Especially if we’re paying $10 more per month for bandwidth. Wifi is great, but most people don’t have it in their car or on the beach or while hiking, for instance.

So, what else is missing? Let us know in the comments.
