Apple is screwing us again - cases and chargers edition

Greetings, friend! Looks like this is your first time here. As such, we encourage you to subscribe to our site via RSS feed or by email so you can get updates as they happen. Thanks for stopping by!

For the umpteenth time in less than a decade, Apple, the great satan, has released another product which renders obsolete all accessories made for previous iterations of the same product.

I am speaking, of course, about the new 3g iPhone. The 3g stands for ‘3rd goddamned time I’ve had to buy a new car charger and/or case‘ in the past year.

Seriously, I am well aware that the accessories market for Apple products (particularly the iPhone and iPod) is a billion dollar business. i know that hundreds of companies make their living revamping their lines every time Apple does the same. But for Steves sake, how about at least making thing backwards compatible, huh?

The Pioneer stereo in my truck has an iPod connector cable. I got the stereo installed this Spring, and before then I had been using a Kensington charger/transmitter. Both have worked fine for iPods and iPhones alike.

So over this past weekend, I plugged the 3g up and immediately was told that my accessory was no longer capable of charging my device, which is just all kinds of awesome, yeah? Fortunately the iPod functionality remains, but that really makes it inconvenient for someone who commutes 10+ hours weekly. My iPhone will now have to be charged overnight at home and at my desk during the day. God forbid I forget and run out of juice before I make it to my next USB powered destination.

Now that’s bad enough, but let’s hold the iPhone and talk about cases for a second. How many iPod/iPhone cases would you estimate you have used over the past 8 years? Me, I’m going to go with around 100. Everything from holster’s to flimsy plastic covers to hard-shell acrylics to rubber-edged grips that look like something you would find on a battlefield toilet seat cover.

Cases are unusual in that they have only a few specific functions which include expressing individuality, protecting your investment and allowing access to the devices hardware. And yet, this basic premise has led to an individual having a desk drawer filled with cases of differing colors, sizes and port accessibility options. What the hell? When did I turn into Howard Hughes of iPod cases?

The new iPhone 3g is a different size than the v1. Are you shocked? I am shocked. No, not really…

The 3g is thicker and wider, but with rounded corners - therefore rendering useless the $100 you’ve shelled out for, um, shells for your original iPhone.

Oh, and did we mention that the iPhones casing itself has changed? Now available in black or white and made of a shiny plastic that is more scratch-resistant and less porous (or ’slippery’, if you will). So now the choice becomes that of covering up the new case or showing it off.

So endeth this rant - let us know what you think and perhaps recommend me a new case or car charger.
:)

Steve W: OTOH, I read an article today by someone who claimed that the iPhone 3G fits in his iPhone case. I guess YOU bought the wrong case.

Actuallly, my iSkin EVO fits just fine, but I hate squishy cases.

I swear, every week there are at least two articles bemoaning that a MacBook redesign is long past due.

Those guys must be shills for case manufacturers, huh?

My Incase thing for my original iPhone fits my new iPhone 3G even better.. Now, I did experience having my iPod cassette adapter for the car not work for the iPhone, but the case thing works just fine for me.

I forgot to use the 'sarcasm' tags, sorry. Yeah, it sucks that I've had to change things up yet again, but as an Apple/Mac fanboy, I'm used to it at this point.

iPod accessories haven't been guaranteed to work with the iPhone from the beginning. For example, any iPod device that connects to the dock connector and to an FM transmitter to send iPod audio into your car radio has never worked with iPhone. Something to do with too many radio transmitters inside the iPhone, probably to do with the idea that the same glitch that makes screeching noises come out of your computer speakers when your cell phone is near them. The iPhone probably can't surmount that problem, ergo such devices have never worked with the iPhone. In fact, I've yet to see one of these devices advertise iPhone compatibility. And yeah, some of these little gimcracks that charge iPods won't charge iPhones.

What are you blithering on about?

I'll give you the point about the charging thing, but it's hardly an issue TBH. I'm a little disappointed I finally have to get rid of my old 4G iPod firewire charger, but seeing as that is a good 4-5 years old now it's hardly a rip off, especially when there was a new AC adaptor in the box.

I have bought a new dock and cable, but my old dock still works fine, it's just being pensioned off to my desk at work, the new cable is needed to replace the firewire one that was 4 years old.

I've never bought an iPod case, it's an item with a finite lifespan. It's going to get a little damaged and a few scratches really aren't the end of the world.

So all in all in the past 5 years of iPod ownership I've spent precisely £29.98 on accessories, and that was this afternoon.

£30 in 5 years doesn't seem bad to me.

About the car-charger thing, I sympathize. Mine broke with the original iPhone. Oh well. I just left an old iPod connected to the car. It's suboptimal, but I can live with it.

About the new iPhone not fitting the old cases...
    *shrugs*
...did it take you until now to figure this out? Seriously. What would you expect? If you buy form-fitting cases for your portable devices, then every redesign in form results in ill-fitting cases. This is an entirely new generation of iPhone, with new technology, new chips, and they redesigned it. They GET to redesign the case. People would complain if they DIDN'T.

So it's a poor fit. That's life. Trying to squeeze yourself into the role of The Guy Who Was Screwed is an even worse fit, though. Brace up a little.
