Boot OSX to a Firewire disk

Ever needed to boot your Mac to a firewire disk/drive, such as the Micromat Protege? Not a problem: hold down the 'Option' key while rebooting, and choose from the listed drives.
You can use the mouse to select the drive, then click the arrow pointing to the right to boot the system.

I backed up my system drive (120GB SATA - 60GB used) to an 80GB external firewire drive using SUPER DUPER. I went to SYSTEM/STARTUP and chose the 80GB EXT Firewire drive and it booted fine.
Then I took the 120GB drive out of my Macbook, installed a 320GB (7200rpm) drive and booted from the external firewire drive - I just held down the option key, there was no choice of drives but it booted up fine.
I then copied the system drive (the one on the firewiredrive) to the newly installed 320GB drive. Turned off the computer. Unplugged the firewire drive. Re-booted of the 320GB internal and all worked!
No need to install all my software again, a smooth transition to upgrade a drive to a bigger one.

Hi, I've tried holding the option key when booting, the only icon visible is the usual mac disc, unfortunately OSX can't see either of my firewire drives, one contains a backup copy of the main OSX disc using Super Duper, and the other disc contains a disc image created using Disc utility after first installing most of my software a year ago.

I've tried holding T and going into firewire target mode, I just see the firewire logo bouncing around the screen like a screensaver.

I've tried Cmd Option Shift Del as well, all I see is an alternating folder with a question mark in it.
