Cool down your MacBook (and add functionality!)

One of the biggest complaints about the otherwise perfect MacBook product line is the extreme heat they put out. Over the past year, I've tried several methods of cooling my MacBook Pro, including software tools as well as various fan and cooling systems.
But among the many solutions I've tried, the best I've found so far is the Vantec LapCool 4 (lpc-430).

Aside from being an excellent way to cool down the system (my MBP 17" runs at about 42 degrees Celsius on average), it adds a great deal of functionality to the system:

  • 3 USB 2 ports
  • 8 in 1 card reader
  • Adjustable fan control (low noise, too)
  • foldable design, perfect for throwing in your bag

As well as the hardware functions, the LapCool 4 has some other nice features, such as adjustable height, built in storage for cables (usb/power) and an on/off switch for the fans.

While I do like the fact that it can be folded up and carried along, to be honest I actually have two of them: one for the office and one for home. I have enough stuff to take back and forth every time I move my computer without adding to my burden.
:)

As mentioned, the LapCool 4 keeps my system pretty cool. Before starting this article, I had Parallels, Ecto, Firefox, Transmit, Safari and Microsoft Remote Desktop running with the following temperatures:
With-Temps

I unplugged the LapCool and sat the MacBook flat on the surface of my wood desk as I wrote, and as we near the end (30 minutes later - hey, I had to go to the bathroom, ok?), the system is getting warm:
Without-Temps

As you can see, the difference is substantial. With the LapCool under the system and plugged in, the temperature drops considerably and even more important, I can stand to touch the system without feeling like I've just grabbed an overcooked burrito out of the microwave.

While there are many other laptop cooling devices out there, the Avantec LapCool 4 is the best I've found when it comes to keeping my MacBook from frying like an egg on a grill.

Below are a few images of the LapCool 4 (from their website) and a few links for you to check out if you want to give it a shot yourself.
