Filemaker, others incompatible with Leopard - why?

After seeing a post on DaringFireball and reading the linked article from Filemaker, I was a little perturbed to see that not only is the current version incompatible, but evidently they are copping out and saying they haven’t performed compatibility testing with older versions.

A few points on this, which is a particular pet peeve of mine - note that this applies to many companies, not just Filemaker.

  • Leopard has been available for development testing for over a year. An Apple Developer Connection subscription which grants access to each beta build is ridiculously inexpensive and there is no reason for any company worth it’s salt to not have an ADC account and begin working on software versions that are compatible from day one.
  • Too many development companies use a new OS a spring board to gouge their customers for a new version. It’s no secret that when a new OS or platform is available, some vendors will intentionally delay their products for months so as to up-sell ‘compatible’ versions to existing customers. It’s a terribly self-serving practice and it needs to stop.
  • The impetus to provide, on launch day, a compatible version of a 3rd party application is far more likely to generate good will and sales than the promise of a newer, forthcoming version ever would.

Yes, i am fully aware that it costs money to pay people to spec, develop and test new software, but if you’re paying them anyway, why not pay them to perform those functions on both current and future derivations of that project? Building backward compatibility is as important as making sure that your application is future proof.

By not bothering to take advantage of services such as developer releases and resources, companies such as Filemaker and Adobe are simply perpetuating the stereotype that software makers are reactive and lazy. When an application is delayed for months simply to force customers into upgrade fees, it shows the utter lack of regard that these companies have for their users.

That being said, if you know of any software makers that have not announced Leopard compatibility (or have already said ‘no’) let us know by posting in the comments.

It less understandable given that FileMaker is still a owned by Apple.. It’s like Apple announcing that iTunes or Apple Life does not work with Leopard…

What’s worse is I have read that FMP9 can actually cause kernel panics…

Not compatible is one thing, kernel panics is something else entirely. (if it is true)

I can’t believe how little information is available on this, surely there are some developers out there who can anonymously comment on what degree of incompatibility currently exists?

I think it crashes as soon as it starts up..

having fairly recently stumped-up for Filemaker Pro 8, I am certainly not paying out again for 9 anytime soon just for Leopard compatibility

for a wholly owned Apple subsidiary to be so ill-prepared seems to me to be pretty pathetic

This smacks of the whole ‘Zune doesn’t work with MS Media Player/Plays for Sure’ - I thought Apple was a better company

Luckily for me I don’t now rely that heavily on Filemaker any more, so my choice is to stick with Tiger or get Leopard and ditch Filemaker

Alternatively, if 8 turns out to work ok with Leopard I’ll be ok. I don’t want to be the first to try it though

8.5 does - recent purchase and no support. Thats a bit rich!

They are even saying that they haven’t tested 8.5 or lower on Leopard and if it happens to not work, they are not even going to bother updating.

So I have a client I’m writing Filemaker databases on and they buy a brand new iMac with Leopard pres-installed on it. That means they have to buy an upgrade to Filemaker 9 too?

Stupid decision. Apple is full of them these days.

What make it even more annoying is that some of the older versions (v3 upwards?) work on Windows and Vista but not on the Mac. I suppose they will drop the Mac version next….

Seems if you want to listen to i-tunes now, ya gotta buy the new software and I don’t trust it…I’ve decided to collect Apple / imac war stories. If you have any, please send them to me at greathierophant@yahoo.com

Tomorrow, I’m going to make a youtube movie about this. I’ll post the address when it’s ready.

This is what I wrote on Common Dreams today (http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/11/07/5087/#comment-132114):

I certainly hope that Monks writes about all the “legal” gangster activities of corporations, besides the obvious ones.

For example, I had to reinstall my Apple Tiger software last night on my imac. Guess what? My i-tunes won’t work and will never work until I buy the new Leopard system software. Seems to force imac customers to buy their new and probably un-tested system software, they took the upgrades off. I live in Europe and the Leopard software costs 129 euros. Ironically, “across the pond,” the same software costs $129. Now everyone knows that the US dollar is almost half the value of a euro.

Why do I have to buy software I can’t afford just so I can get my i-tunes back? My computer is only 17 months old and I’ve already had to replace the super-drive and hard drive. This cost me almost 600 euros because I trusted the Apple brand so I didn’t buy the extra year warranty. Now Apple has gone the way of the almighty dollar! I’ve learned since that the new g-5’s have major design flaws but the scions of wal-street pressured Apple to put these computers on the market as fast as possible to squeeze as many profits as possible.

Now why do I have to buy the “NEW SPANGLED” Leopard software if I ever want to hear my i-tunes again? I mean, I can’t even listen to a music CD until I spread my consumer legs and pay them to rape me for 129 euros. I don’t want the new software! I can’t afford it! And Apple has made it impossible for me to ever listen to my i-tunes again because they disappeared all the i-tune upgrades so the consumer is FORCED TO BUY the new software! Now is this Friendly? No, it’s psychopathic! It’s also called EXTORTION. But the gangstas of wal-street have decreed this kind of corporate behavior not only legal and acceptable, but also the pinnacle of economic achievement and corporate behavior!

Although I earned four university degrees, I can’t get a job here or anywhere! I’m one of the hundreds of millions of people economically displaced by globalization. I wept when I found out that another corporation (one I used to trust, too) is trying to rape me economically - squeeze me - for more, more money when I don’t have it. Now I can’t use the one thing I loved the most - my i-tunes - unless I shell out more, more money!

I think I’ll suffer without the i-tunes (and I’m a musicholic) and buy the book…I want to learn more about why these psychopathic corporate leaders and their psychopathic corporations can get away with the constant fleecing and extortion. C’mon. I can’t listen to my music off my computer because the gods of Apple and wal-street have decreed that I must buy their new software first?
