IntelliScreen has a major upgrade, goes shareware

IntelliScreen, which we have discussed before and absolutely love, has updated to version 1.03 and added numerous features - including a new shareware licensing scheme that has some folks in an uproar.IntelliScreen.png IntelliScreen3.png

While the new version adds features such as transparent (and user defined) themes, passcode protection and custom layouts, the thing that seems to be the focal point for most users is that it is no longer free.
Update: After some email exchanges with Mario at Intelliborn, we have a coupon code for you guys. If you’d like to register the premium version ($19.99), you can enter ‘betatester‘ at checkout and get $5.00 off.

I’ll not get into the entire debate over freeware vs. shareware here, as that isn’t something anyone is going to change their minds about. However, i will note that people have grown accustomed to instant gratification with the growth of the internet, so when they see something that used to be free with a new price tag, they tend to freak out a little. Kinda reminds me of the Hillary Clinton forums, to be honest.

Me, I don’t mind paying for software (or music or movies, for that matter). I value the fact that someone spent time creating something and they deserve (if they so desire) to get paid for their efforts. If you don’t think it is something you should pay for, you have two options: develop it yourself or don’t use it. It’s rather simple.
:)

Anywho, IntelliScreen is now shareware and has a three tiered licensing scheme:

  • Basic (fine for most people) = $4.99
  • Premium = $19.99
  • Premium w/ Support = $49.99

Admittedly, the $50 for 6 months of support seems steep, but my guess is that this will get you some one on one time with the Intelliborn guys, as opposed to just another FAQ/forum.

There is a 10 day trial, but after that you’ll need to register.
