Jailbreak your iPhone in five minutes

After assisting in two more jailbreaks this weekend (that just sounds so dire...), here are my quick and easy instructions for those who want to jailbreak (allowing them to add apps, wallpapers, themes and so on) to their AT&T iPhone.
If you are looking for unlocking or anything else, check out ZiPhone (below) as it does that too, but it's not what this post is about.

Ok, here we go:
Download ZiPhone from the official site or this mirror: http://babygotmac.com/dl/ZiPhoneOSX.zip (8mb)

Unzip it, then run ZiPhone. Choose 'Jailbreak' and let it do it's thing. iTunes will give you a couple of dialogs...just click them away.

After ZiPhone restarts, it is done - you will see an 'installer' program on the iPhone desktop. Run it, then install (at least) these:

  • Summerboard - after installed, there is an app on the desktop called 'smbprefs'. It let's you change themes. If you want more themes, run Installer again and browse the 'themes (summerboard)' folder...install a few, then switch them using smbprefs.
  • iSlots - slot machine game that is simply awesome. :)
  • smartRSS - great rss reader

There are numerous other apps and games...browse around the Installer app categories. Also, be sure to check out http://www.appleiphoneschool.com for mini-reviews on most apps released via Installer.

A couple of notes:

  • After installing an app, your iPhone will do a quick logout - this is to refresh the database and only take a few seconds...it doesn't mean anything is wrong.
  • Uninstalling via Installer is simple and a good way to get rid of extra apps and themes.
  • After choosing a theme in smbPrefs, be sure to scroll down and choose 'restart Springboard' to apply it.

I'll update this as more thoughts arrive...if you have tips, post them in the comments.

This worked perfectly...thank you. There's a reason we all refer to you as "Mac Daddy." Primarily it's because you make a mean tofu but also because you know apple better than Newton.
