‘Mac’ is not an acronym

Public information alert!

MAC, when used to indicate a Macintosh computer, is not accurate. Using all capital letters denotes an acronym, which is not correct in this context.

MAC is a common acronym for ‘media access control’ address, which is a set of characters assigned to a network device such as a wireless or ethernet card.

When referring to a Macintosh computer, you should instead use ‘Mac’, which is short for ‘Macintosh’. Sure, you could use it as an acronym for ‘Macintosh Apple Computer’, but that would make you stupid, and we don’t want that, do we?

So endeth todays snippy pet peeve. Carry on.
