Manage your Amazon MP3 downloads

If you’re OCD like me, you like to keep things separated. This means that music purchased from the new Amazon.com MP3 store need to fit into my system and behave, lest they be punished.

So, part one: Tell the Amazon MP3 Downloader where to put your music. By default, it will create a sub-folder in your Music folder, then copy the music to your iTunes folder, creating unnecessary dupes.

To fix this, open the Downloader, then choose ‘Application/Preferences’. Change the ‘Save downloads to’ entry to ‘iTunes Music’ in your main Music folder (username/Music).

Now when you download music from Amazon, it will go into your Music folder and be added to iTunes without creating a duplicate and wasting hard disk space.

On to part two: creating a smart playlist (as I said — OCD, sorry!). I want to keep any music purchased from Amazon in it’s own playlist, so I create a smart one by clicking ‘File/New Smart Playlist‘ in iTunes:

Next, we change the criteria to ‘Comment‘ and enter in ‘Amazon.com Song ID‘ in the value field, telling the playlist to look for this text in your music files (click for larger):

Now, go and enjoy the bounties of DRM free music available on Amazon!
