Use QuickLook to see the contents of a Folder or zip file

Ever wondered what was inside a zip file but didn’t want to have to go to the trouble of extracting/opening it with some bulky program? How about looking at all of the folders in your Downloads folder and asking yourself exactly what ‘untitled folder 4′ contained?

Wonder no more! An enterprising developer has created two QuickLook plugins that will show you the contents of either a zip file or a folder with the tap of your space bar.

  • Download this file from BabyGotMac (QL_Plugins.zip - 140kb) or from the developer (in Japanese).
  • Unzip the files.
  • Copy these files: Folder.qlgenerator and zip.qlgenerator to this folder in your home directory: (username)/Library/QuickLook. If you want all users on your Mac to have the functionality, copy them to /Library/QuickLook. If the ‘QuickLook’ folder doesn’t exist, create it.
  • Log out of the system then back in. After doing so, you should now be able to highlight a folder or zip file, tap your space bar and see what’s inside.

These plugins are really cool. What I hadn’t realised until I tried these plugins was that QuickLook works in any view mode of Finder. I was under the mistaken impressiong that it only worked when in CoverFlow mode until today ! Doh !
