Yahoo pulls a fast one

Greetings, friend! Looks like this is your first time here. As such, we encourage you to subscribe to our site via RSS feed or by email so you can get updates as they happen. Thanks for stopping by!

A bit off-topic, but what the hell, Yahoo?

I’ve used Godaddy (against my better judgement) for almost a decade now, whenever I need to register a domain name. Yes, they have their problems, and yes, they can be jerks sometimes, but they’ve never done something like this:

Get ready for another year of Yahoo! Domains

Dear scott mcdaniel,

Thanks for using Yahoo! Domains. We’re writing to remind you that it’s time for the annual autorenewal of your service.

Your Domains plan, associated with the domain scottmcdaniel.org, will renew on 08/19/2008. If your billing information is up-to-date, there’s no need to do a thing (except keep enjoying your service).

Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!’s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.

You can verify your billing information by visiting https://billing.yahoo.com/ and clicking the Update link next to your plan. Click the gray Edit button to the right of your payment method to review your payment details.

(Please note that the billing center will not reflect the new $34.95 domain-renewal price until July 1. Until that time, you will continue to see the old renewal price next to your plan.)

Have questions? Please visit our help center or contact us anytime.

Best regards,

The Yahoo! Small Business team

See the funny part is that i registered the domain from yahoo because they had a sale one day - I paid like $4.99 for the domain (yes, i just looked it up, that’s correct). Now they want to boost the price to renew by 700% - is it any wonder they are on the verge of self-imploding with management decisions like that?

Good bye Yahoo.

I hear you. Here's one for you: I registered a domain with Yahoo back in 2001 or so... There was a glitch with the process and somehow their system registered the domain but never transferred it to me. So I was charged for the domain and never got it. And they've charged me $25 for the renewal EACH YEAR SINCE. I've tried calling, chatting, emailing... no one can fix it. Eventually I even tried not updating my credit card info and letting it expire -- unfortunately I was using Yahoo Music at the time and had to update the card to get access to the music again. I'm STILL being charged for that domain, and I have never once used it... I think we can both say Yahoo domains suck so bad.
