Paging Dr. Google, code green
http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/02/21/google.records.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryview
Google is piloting a project wherein they are storing the medical records of approximately 15,000 volunteers. The records are stored in the users Google account for retrieval anywhere.
I really can’t think of any practical reasons for this other than perhaps tying it into a ’shareable’ network that would allow you to grant access to a physician (i.e. Google Calendar), who can then update it as necessary.
Or perhaps a labyrinth system that would allow your Doctor to update your records, your pharmacist to check in and fill your prescriptions, then you pay for them using your Google Checkout account - and then a delivery driver uses Google Maps to find your house and deliver your meds. Hmmm.
Of course, the big question is: how is Google going to profit?
The bigGER question is at what point do we put on out tinfoil has and start to worry about the fact that Google knows more about the people of Earth than most governments? Creepy…
Macbook missing keystroke resolution finally?
Check software update, boys and girls. Apple has posted a firmware update that will, ostensibly, resolve the LONGSTANDING issue of the first keystroke in a typing session being skipped.
Let us know how it works for you, gentle readers.
This MacBook and MacBook Pro firmware update addresses an issue where the first key press may be ignored if the computer has been sitting idle. It also addresses some other issues.
The update package will install an updater application into the Applications/Utilities folder and will launch it automatically. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process.

iPhoneDrive is now MegaPhone - and is updated to v1.5
eCamm Networks - a longtime Mac software maker, has renamed their iPhoneDrive product to ‘MegaPhone’ (I think MegiPhone would have been cool play on words, but I’ve been known to drink a lot, so…) and added several features as well as making some tweaks.
Changes in the 1.5 version include:
- Product is now called MegaPhone.
- Adds ability to add, edit and delete notes.
- Add ability to delete SMS and call log items.
- Adds date column to photo and camera mode.
- Date information is now preserved when exporting photos.
- Numerous minor fixes and enhancements.

MegaPhone can be found at the eCamm site, available here.
Save XP - seriously!
I know it’s weird to see this here, but for anyone who has to use Windows, the choice between XP and Vista is oh-so clear.
Infoworld has taken it upon itself to try to save Windows XP, which Microsoft plans to stop selling as of June 30th 2008. I (and over 100,000 other people evidently) feel that this decision is a bad move for number of reasons - most involving the fact that Vista is garbage.
Take a look at the petition and sign it if you are so inclined - the Windows you save may be your own.

Secret Folder ‘08 released by Apimac
Press release from PRMac.com:
Apimac announced today the release of Secret Folder ‘08, the latest release of its shareware utility made to conceal folders and files under Mac OS X. Apimac Secret Folder is a Mac OS X program that provides an easy and fast way to protect personal documents and avoid them being seen, modified, or erased by other users. It allows users to hide folders and their contents. Files and folders can be added by means of a single click on a choose dialog box or via drag and drop. The application is simple to use and can be protected with a password.
This program uses the standard functionality of the operating system to make folders and files invisible and it’s very useful to keep information away from prying eyes or kids who may accidentally modify or delete personal files. For users that need more advanced levels for protecting data, there are other ways as protecting information on removable media (as creating encrypted disk images) or using Mac OS X FileVault.
Among the other changes, new to the ‘08 release is a new user interface making the application more intuitive and easy to use; new options to make visible all the listed items at launch and make invisible all the listed items at quit; new option to make visible an item by double-clickin on it on the item list and various code optimizations.
iPhones on 1.1.3 Can Jailbreak Themselves
Press release from PRMac.com:
AriX and Ben have announced the immediate availability of iJailBreak 0.5.1, the latest version of the open source Mac OS X jailbreaking utility. iJailBreak 0.5.1 allows iPhone (and soon iPod Touch) users the ability to jailbreak, and if so desired, unlock and “hactivate,” their device in mere minutes. Currently iJailBreak 0.5.1 is an Intel-architecture only application that supports Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard.
This process also works for other firmware versions, however iJailBreak 0.5.x was written with 1.1.3 in mind, thus it’s suggested that you only use iJailBreak 0.5.x for 1.1.3. Note that the unlock only works for iPhones with Boot Loader 4.6 (all iPhones that came pre-loaded with 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 have Boot Loader 4.6).
iJailBreak 0.5.x fixes many of the issues found with the “1.1.3 Soft Upgrade”-based method, including the inability to play some DRMed music. Those who have used the 1.1.3 Soft Upgrade include users of iJailBreak 0.4.x and iJailBreakMobile 1.0.
An iPod Touch-compatible version will be shipped as an update as soon as technically and efficiently possible and will include the free and legal enabling of the iPhone applications.
The jailbreaking process is very straightforward: download iJailBreak 0.5.1 from Google Code, plug in your device, open and run iJailBreak, and when you’re ready, click the Jailbreak button. The entire process should take just a few minutes, and no music or settings will be lost. Your device will automatically reboot into your new, jailbroken 1.1.3 firmware.
Also, a feature for a future version the 0.5.x branch is in the works that allows users of the “1.1.3 Soft Upgrade” (which, again, includes users of iJailBreak 0.4.x and iJailBreakMobile 1.0) to “truly” jailbreak their device. This is not currently in 0.5.1.
As with all previous versions of iJailBreak, 0.5.x is free/open source software released under the GNU General Public License version 2.
