Download YouTube video to iTunes with Tooble
Tooble is an awesome new app that will download videos from YouTube, convert them to mp4 and add it to your iTunes library, where it can then be transferred to your iPod or iPhone.
The app is free and works perfectly in my testing thus far. Perfect for those situations when you don’t have access to YouTube but need to show a video.
Their official description:
Tooble is a brand new program designed to bring the vast mine of content on YouTube straight to your iPod. In one easy step, tooble automatically downloads, converts and imports any YouTube video to play on your video iPod, iPhone, AppleTV, or even on your computer with iTunes. Now all your favorite videos are with you and ready to play, no matter where you are.
Tooble’s browser lets any user search and select video from the whole of what YouTube has to offer. You can navigate using the lists of featured videos, enter a search in the search bar, or even enter in a URL you already know; tooble gives you access to everything from the elegant comfort of a simply beautiful interface. Once you have found something you like, simply check it and hit the download button- tooble takes care of the rest. Your video will then be downloaded, converted to an easily viewable mp4 format, and automatically imported into iTunes. Now all you need to do is plug in your iPod, and you’ll have all the content you know and love right in your pocket.
Don’t limit your entertainment to when and where you can access the Internet. Give tooble a try, we know you’ll love it.

iPhone 1.1.3 jailbreak completed, not released
But they’re not releasing it until the Apple SDK comes out, according to ‘Hackint0sh‘.
Includes grainy video shot by a nervous guy of a jailbroken iPod Touch.
Leopard 10.5.2 update adds DVD sharing, better Stacks, translucent Menu bar and remote backup!

- DVD/CD Sharing, as seen on the new Macbook Air
- I can’t believe I didn’t think to test this: Time Machine can also use a disk connected to your Airport Extreme as a backup location, hooray!

Yes, the Extreme is named Express. Force of habit of calling it that for years, sorry. - Time Machine drop down in menubar
- Hey, look - Time Machine can backup to a network drive again!
- Translucent Menu bar option in Desktop Preferences

- Better Stacks options, including List, Folder and Grid views

‘Folder’ shows the icon as, well, a Folder and ‘Stack’ shows the most recent documents icon.
This one is for commenter #14…

The 10.5.2 release of Leopard is expected to be released at any time.

Macbook Air bag and 17″ Macbook cases
A couple of new products out that are worthy of note.
Speck has finally released their 17″ Macbook hard shell cases. Available in blue, red and clear, they run around $40. They look great and don’t hinder operation at all.
Next up is news about a case for the Macbook Air, sent to us by Waterfield Designs:
WaterField Designs announces the new MacBook Air SleeveCase. The size 13-2
SleeveCase is designed specifically for the MacBook Air and fits it like a
glove. (We made sure of that at Macworld today; now our sewing shop is
busily putting them into production.) The new SleeveCase is available for
order today at www.sfbags.com and will begin shipping no later than Friday,
January 25.Link to the product page:

This new SleeveCase, cushioned with high-grade neoprene and wrapped in a
ballistic nylon shell, adds itself to the list of over 50 different
custom-fitting laptop sleeves offered by WaterField Designs. Because all
design and production is done in San Francisco near company headquarters,
WaterField Designs is able to respond quickly to meet consumer needs when
new laptop models are announced.
They look a bit pricy, but very slick and well constructed. If you can afford an $1800 Air, spring for a nice case, I guess.
New iTunes/iPhone combo restore manual management of music
Many of us were very disappointed when we learned we couldn’t manage or play music music directly from our iPhones.
But it appears that the combination of iTunes 7.6 and iPhone 1.1.3 have brought back those MUCH missed features. You can now drag and drop to your iPhone and listen to the music stored there, without issue.
[EDIT]Looks like it is the iTunes update alone that frees the music, so if you’re happy with 1.1.2 (or .1 even), stick with it and upgrade iTunes to 7.6. I kinda wish I had…I miss iSlots.
The oh-so disappointing Macbook Air
I really, really, really wanted a Mac the size of my Asus EEE, even if it cost a little more and lacked a feature or two.
But Apple has gone and broken my Tuscaloosa heart again. Instead of a tiny, more portable Mac with innovative features (WAN internet, etc.), we get a super thin Macbook with a 13″ screen that is lacking several things while adding very little.
My gripes:
- The price. Holy shit, seriously? $1799 for the ‘base’ model and a whopping $3089 for the model with a 64gb SSD drive? Sorry, but that premium just isn’t worth the cost - especially given that it is more expensive than a top of the line Macbook Pro.
- No option to plug in a high speed card like those available from ATT, Sprint or Verizon.
- No ethernet. Yeah, that’s right…you get wireless or nothing baby. Yes, you can buy a USB to ethernet adapter, but you only have…
- One USB port. Hope you like to travel with powered USB hubs.
- No optical drive unless you use an external drive or the new ‘remote disc’ app, which will presumably require installation on another system.
- No firewire - way to push those standards, Apple. Hell, even a mini-port would have been better than nothing.
- No user upgradeable RAM - no one will ever use more than 2gb of memory, right?
- The battery is not a user replaceable part. Yes, you read it right. It has the same battery situation as an iPhone or iPod. Good thing you can fly anywhere in the world in under 5 hours!
That being said, it is without a doubt the most elegant laptop ever released. But the Cube was also considered evolutionary and look how that ended up.
Yes, dimension and size-wise it is a marvel, but it has obviously paid a precious price for being so tiny.
I hate to say it, but the only way I can see this being even remotely successful is if it drops in price by about 40%. What do *you* think?
Dreamhost billing goes berzerk
Dreamhost, a very popular web hosting company, has had a billing glitch and charged hundreds of customers in advance for service of 2 years or more.
Some customers have indicated they have been charged in excess of $1000. Personally I was hit for $238 and $598 for two different accounts. Fortunately, one account had an old CC tied to it and the other is valid but can be fixed.
I do feel bad for those using debit cards who might see overdraft fees because of this glitch.
Macworld Bingo - get ready to rumble!
Today is the big day. What will it be - new iPhones, Macbooks with optical drives and built-in high speed internet or an updated AppleTV home theater package comprised of mass storage, Airport Extreme and a 60″ plasma tv?
Wait and see and play bingo at the same time!
